SS. Crucifix

Archconfraternity of SS. Crucifix - Archdiocese of Matera-Irsina

Miglionico - MT

The Archconfraternity takes its name from the wooden sculpture of the SS. Crucifix venerated in the Parish of Santa Maria Maggiore in Miglionico of the Archdiocese of Matera-Irsina.

The precious sculpture of SS. Crocifisso, much venerated by the entire community of Miglionico, is attributed to the sculptor Fra 'Umile da Petralia Soprana (Palermo) and dates back to the years 1623-1629. Alternating moments of prayer, penance, fasting, contemplation and in the grace of God, the friar sculpted his wooden crucifixes in life size; that of Miglionico, with its superhuman beauty and powerful Franciscan mysticism, has become one of the most famous over the centuries.

The anatomy of the Crucified Christ is characterized by swollen tendons and veins, made with string of various sections; the rings of the spinal column and the lacerations with the effect of the flesh torn and turned up are evident, rendered realistic beyond belief and made with parchment paper. The color tone is original, the statue is well preserved; the coloring, even if slightly oxidized, gives the right red shade of blood cascading from the side and purplish of bruises and swelling. The work is an icon before which every faithful and devotee remains immobile and speechless.
