Archconfraternity of SS. Annunziata - Diocese of Noto

    Ispica - RG

The city of Ispica boasts a history of about two thousand years that brings us back to the settlements of our fathers in the quarry; the strongest link we have with history are those religious rites of which the Archconfraternity is still the guardian today.

The Archconfraternity of the SS. Annunziata (founded as early as 1470) constitutes a point of reference for the community of Ispica and is based on the principles of its statute granted on the foundations of canon law based on worship and the Christian formation of the individual, with the task of taking care of the dignity of the functions religious.

The sculptural group depicting the SS. Christ with the Cross on His Shoulders, along the Via del Calvario, is an artisanal papier-mâché and stucco work dating back to the early eighteenth century. The sculpture, which has above all a religious value as it is the most venerated work of the Church of SS. Annunziata di Ispica, represents Christ ascending to Calvary, with the Cross on his shoulders, between two executioners, who strike him violently. The sculptural group is carried in a solemn procession on Good Friday since 1861, in place of the ancient procession of the Holy Thorn which has more remote origins.

The work was the subject of a delicate but successful restoration in 1985 by Valente Assenza, who restored it to its former glory.
